World Sight Day comes to Stony Stratford 2022

On Thursday 13th October World Sight Day was commemorated by members of Milton Keynes (Stony Stratford) Lions Club. Vision is one of Lion CIubs International five global causes (Childhood Cancer, Diabetes, Hunger, Environment and Vision). In 1925, Lions Clubs International promised Helen Keller to become’ Knights of the Blind’. This has led to the international adoption of the white stick as a symbol of the user’s skills and talents, mobility and independence. It also allows the sighted person to recognize that the user is visually impaired.

Today the association is as dedicated as ever to hastening the day when no one should suffer unnecessarily from vision problems. Through eye centres and hospitals, medicines and surgeries, eye glasses and eye banks, Lions are working to end preventable blindness and aid the visually impaired.

We arranged a blindfold walk as an ideal way to promote our work for sight. Local Councillor Jane Carr was blindfolded, given a white cane for confidence and assisted to walk the length of the High Street. Also accompanying the Lions group was Paula Suchy Chairman of MK Readers and MK Sound. Both of these organisations have Lion members volunteering in various roles for the betterment of blind and visually impaired local residents.

During the walk it was noted that the tactile road crossings were hindered by floral containers, advertising A-frames and other street furniture created a danger to the visually impaired and that there was not consistency with the tactile road markings. These concerns have been passed to the relevant agencies. Fortunately, there were no abandoned e-scooters to negotiate!

After the walk we retired to the MacIntyre Café which is manned by special needs staff for refreshments and to talk about the event. We were also able to give a presentation on Message in a Bottle/Wallet.

Cllr Jane was very impressed with the event, having had the experience of being in darkness, not being in total control, the fear of having to rely on her other senses and totally dependent on LP Doreen’s support.

As the walk progressed, we all learnt something new about our local area. Was it worthwhile? -yes Would we do it again? -another yes.

World Sight Day 2018

Today, in Stony Stratford, District Governor Doreen Allen, Lion President David Tunney and Lions Andrew Allen, Geoff Ransome and Brian Kite met with Cllr Martin Petchey, Mayor of Milton Keynes, Alison Deuchars of Bucks Vision and Terry xxx of MK Reader Service to raise awareness of World Sight Day.

Martin and David bravely allowed themselves to be blindfolded and led by Alison and Terry along the busy pavements of Stony Stratford.

The party then enjoyed coffee in McIntyre Coffee Shop where the Mayor, Bucks Vision, MK Reader service and McIntyre staff were presented with Lions Club of Milton Keynes (Stony Stratford) banners.
